Equality Alliance is helping to “Nix the Six”

“We’ve had members attend phone banks; we constantly call our representatives, telling them not to pass HJR-6,” Liam O’Sullivan said. “We also write letters with the same message.””

Equality Alliance is encouraging the rights of others, by contributing to the LGBT community. Recently the club has been working on the “Nix the Six” Campaign to eliminate the HJR-6 which would add a discriminatory element to the state Constitution.

An amendment called Joint Resolution 0006 that was passed in 2011 said that “Only a marriage between one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in Indiana. A legal status identical or substantially similar to that of marriage for unmarried individuals shall not be valid or recognized.”

HJR-6 would add on to the last amendment so that no other kind of domestic partnership would be recognize at all. This keeps gay couples from tax benefits, hospital visitation rights, and other things straight couples seem to take for granted. This is a humans rights issue and preventing it from passing is one of the clubs primary concerns at the moment.

“We’ve had members attend phone banks; we constantly call our representatives, telling them not to pass HJR-6,” Liam O’Sullivan said. “We also write letters with the same message.”

Equality Alliance is helping to stop this bill from passing. The club’s meetings are every other Wednesday after school from 3- 4:30 in room B236.
