The school’s founder, Wilhelm von Humboldt, implemented a novel educational model at the university, which emphasized holistic, curiosity-driven learning, rather than exclusively vocational, market-driven learning.

Robotics Team traveled to New Britton Elementary School Sept. 20 to introduce the team and teach their design process to Christine Buening’s fourth grade class. Beauning’s class is doing a project to create a robot that will help society.

“We introduce them to how you go about building a robot, just to kind of get them introduced to the idea of what they’ll be doing with their robot in their class and what they can do with this same idea further on in life,” Robotics Team senior Hannah Marrs said.

According to Marrs, explaining robotics  to the class is surprisingly simple.

“The design process itself is a pretty general concept that can be applied on pretty basic terms that fourth graders can understand. It’s just trying to figure out a way to make it applicable for them, giving them something that they know in their lives that they can make the connections themselves. That’s probably the biggest part of it,” Mars said.

This started last year when Buening got the idea to build robots and contacted FHS assistant principal Steve Loser about the robotics team helping them kick off the project.

“The Robotics Team did a great job telling them about the design process.  They told them to think outside the box, in the box, under the box and on top of the box.  My students took away that anything is possible, and your first design will not be your last one,” Beuning said.

The class is currently in the brainstorming stage. When they finish, they will work with a partner to plan a design, bring in materials, build and edit the design of their robot.

Robotics Team is currently in their off-season, but are meeting twice a week to build a t-shirt launching robot to introduce new members to the way the team is run. Interested students can contact club sponsor Daniel Mach at [email protected].
