The school’s founder, Wilhelm von Humboldt, implemented a novel educational model at the university, which emphasized holistic, curiosity-driven learning, rather than exclusively vocational, market-driven learning.

Ski Club Offers Cold Fun

Even if they are new to the sport, members can have a good time sliding down the slopes. Photo used with permission of Tribune News Service.

It’s time to hit the slopes. With winter comes winter sports, and with Ski Club, hosted by English teachers Haley Care and Ben Beasley, students can enjoy the cold air while getting a workout.

Ski Club meets one four dates throughout the year; Jan. 5, Jan. 12, Feb. 2 and Feb. 9. If the club decides, they will hold a full day  trip  to Bittersweet Michigan. The date is not decided, but the trip would begin at 6:30 a.m and conclude at 10 p.m. Buses take members to Perfect North, a skiing resort, at 3:30 and return at midnight. There are only a few buses, so space is limited.

“I’ve gone skiing before in Michigan, so I thought it would be fun to do it again,” freshman Jackson Dougherty said.

The Ski Club has a price of $290 entry fee to pay for all four trips, but if students bring their own equipment the price reduces to $230. The optional day trip will be worth $100.

“My family started skiing when I was little, and we go with friends once in a while,” freshman Dane Trainor said. “It just seemed like a fun club to join.”

The club currently has around forty members and always welcomes more people. The sign up is on Perfect North’s website and on a Google Doc handout distrubuted at the call out meetings.

“I’m looking forward to hanging out with friends and skiing,” Dougherty said. “Skiing is a fun hobby of mine that I enjoy.”
