The school’s founder, Wilhelm von Humboldt, implemented a novel educational model at the university, which emphasized holistic, curiosity-driven learning, rather than exclusively vocational, market-driven learning.

Freshmen impact 2014-2015 school year

Natalie Clark- It is hard to stand out in a large school, but in a class of 873 it is hard to even find a place to sit down. The class of 2018 is the largest group of students to come through FHS, and nobody was quite prepared. The hallways are overcrowded, people sit on the floor during class, and students were left locker-less for days.

While everyone was concerned with the sheer number of students that arrived on the first day, there are already definite pros to the situation.

“The freshmen brought a lot of energy to tiger fever, and hopefully their diverse class can bring that into the classroom and extra-curriculars.” Guidance coordinator Linda Brown said.

Although the freshmen already brought many positive aspects to the school, there were large changes that had to be made just to accommodate their size.

“First of all, we’re making a huge addition to the building, which will help reduce class sizes, and get us back to three lunches. We also added the small lockers this year, with the mindset of phasing out text books in the upcoming years.” Brown said.

All the major issues with over-crowding have calmed since the initial panic, and more desks and lockers have been moved in for those left without a seat, or space for their belongings. The issues have been dealt with as the rapid construction of the senior academy is under way.
