A saying typically heard at Christmas time is related to Santa Claus and how “he sees you when you’re sleeping and he knows when you’re awake.” Director Michael Dougherty took a different spin this Christmas season with the new horror movie, “Krampus.”
“I don’t think it’s right to make a scary movie out of Christmas because during that time you want to be happy and watch movies that will make you think about the positives, not the negatives,” sophomore Katie Griffin said.
Based off of an ancient Austrian fable, Krampus is a devil-like creature that comes around Christmas and pays a visit to those who have been “naughty” and lost the holiday spirit.
That is what happened to Max, played by Emjay Anthony, in “Krampus” and his family who stay over at him house for Christmas and bicker about everything.
Through all of the chaos, another ‘living’ being joins the family in hopes of bringing back the spirit but not in the way that the family was intending on. Krampus dropping on the front door terrorizes Max’s family. Not for the horror but to bring the family together and realize being with one another is a good thing, not something to dread.
By the end of the movie, Krampus ends his journey once the family has regained their Christmas spirit in his eyes. With everyone thinking it is all said and done, the audience are shown that Krampus will always see you when you are sleeping and when you are awake.
Overrall, it was a good movie, but horror movies are not my type of movie during the holiday times. Krampus is now playing at Hamilton 16 Imax.
