Ikea just recently informed Fishers that contractors have been hired for the 289,000-square-foot store scheduled to open in fall 2017. Fishers new Ikea will be located on 35 acres southeast of I-69 and East 116th Street. Construction costs for the project were estimated to be about $40 million according to the company.
“I’m excited for the new IKEA because it will create jobs for Hoosiers and also be a great place to buy dorm furniture for college,” junior Josh Ahmed said.
Pepper Construction has been hired to manage the project. Construction alone is expected to produce 500 jobs, and the store plans to hire 250 employees when the Ikea opens next fall.
While there are new positions to fill, IKEA begins hiring at eighteen, so only interested seniors will have new job opportunities there next fall.
Lars Peterson, IKEA’s U.S. president decided to open an IKEA in Indiana to help build the stores presence in Indiana.
According to the company, the store will feature “nearly 10,000 exclusively designed items, 50 inspirational room-settings, three model home interiors, a supervised children’s play area and a 325-seat restaurant serving Swedish specialties such as meatballs with lingonberries and salmon plates, as well as American dishes.”
