Programming machines to execute various tasks is a true reality for members of the robotics team. However, when it comes to robotics, there are quite a few misconceptions that students at FHS have about what the robotics team actually does.

“One common misconception about robotics is that we’re a club, but we’re actually a team that actively competes,” junior Jackson Summers said.

Summers is a first-year member for the team, and remarks on what his membership has done for him so far.

“As a first-year member, I’m still learning the ropes,” Summers said. “In the first three or so months I’ve been on the team, I’ve learned so much.”

The veteran team members are currently busy teaching the new members about different events the different events they participate in, something that can be a very long and detailed process according to Summers.

“I learned about computer programming, but I decided that it wasn’t for me,” Summers said. “Now I’m learning about pneumatics, which is more my speed.”

Pneumatics is the science that studies the use of pressurized air and gases. However, Summers reports that each event they compete in is tailored to design a certain type of robot. So if you do not perfer pneumatics, you will build a different type of robot for the next competition.

The robotics team is currently in the process of orienting new members. Their next meet is yet to be determined.
