Zach Galifianakis has been a hit in previous films like “Dinner for Shmucks,” and his role in the “Hangover” trilogy was gut-busting, but this new “Masterminds” left something to be desired.
The movie follows David Ghantt (Zach Galifianakis), a boring guy with a boring job, driving an armored van full of other people’s money. His crush, Kelly Campbell (Kristen Wiig) convinces him to help her and her friend, Steve Chambers (Owen Wilson) steal $17 million. As soon as the money is in the thieves’ hands, Campbell and Chambers make off with the cash leaving Ghantt to hide from authorities as the duo flaunt their newly stolen money.
“Masterminds” was set up for success with a creative story, based off the Hillbilly Heist of 1997, a well known director and actors known for comedic genius. I expected so much more from Hess, who also directed “Napoleon Dynamite” one of the best comedies I have ever seen. The comedy within the story was just mediocre. One liners can not carry the whole movie, most of the jokes were a miss. There were short laughs in the theater, but no uncontrollable laughing fits.
“Masterminds” had inconsistent humor and was floated by big name actors. I give it a two out of five, and I recommend waiting till it is in Redbox to rent. It is not worth eight bucks.
