One step at a time
Students in action club lacking shoes for shoe drive.
The students in action club hosted a shoe drive on October 6th, outside of the orchestra concert. Though the turnout for the orchestra concert was good, not everyone brought shoes to donate.
“We got about 30 pairs,” junior Maddy Collier said. “We were hoping for more shoes than we ended up collecting, but it’s a start.”
Despite the turnout, this is only the beginning of the shoe drive. According to Collier, who is the club’s president, it will continue throughout the year in cycles.
“It’s still going on, we’re still collecting shoes,” Collier said. “There are bins in the CCA. They look like trashcans and they have shoes glued on top of them.”
Shoes collected from the drive will go to the nonprofit organization Changing Footprints. Changing footprints is an Indianapolis based organization that was founded in 2005.
“[Changing Footprints] is nice because we’re collecting shoes that we’re giving back to our district, and then it also goes to the greater Indianapolis area,” Collier said. “So we get to look at it from a local scale, but also a global one because they’ve been sending shoes to Ukraine and Poland.”
Students in action is a service based club that has different divisions in order to serve different parts of the community. Club officer and junior Carmen Rufatto joined the organization during her sophomore year and was quickly bumped to a leadership position.
“[Students in action] is kind of a choose your own adventure,” Rufatto said. “You can pick whatever committee you want or you can create a new one.”
Due to the diversity of the service projects, club participants are able to meet new people in the community and serve them based on their needs.
“Service work is a really important aspect of community,” Rufatto said. “It’s a really fun way to engage in your environment and be able to help people. It’s a great way to meet new people.”
