“Teacher Teach It” is a podcast hosted by Lance Kuhn, an ACP, IB, Organic, and Honors Chemistry teacher at Fishers High School. Kuhn came up with the concept during the summer of 2024 after receiving the Teacher of the Year Award for the 2023-24 school year. Some changes were made to the idea before it ultimately came to fruition.
“When I first thought of this idea over the summer, I wasn’t thinking a podcast,” Kuhn said. “I was thinking more of a discussion board kind of thing.”
While Kuhn’s original intent wasn’t a podcast, he took into consideration the words of his kids, who had been urging him to do one for years. Kuhn also thought of Assistant Principal Sarah Riordan’s suggestion.
“[Riordan] said ‘well, we should do a podcast,’” Kuhn said. “The main reason is because [podcasts are] portable. People can do it whenever and wherever; you don’t have to have your computer.”
Kuhn understood this reasoning, as he himself had listened to podcasts on his way to and from picking his kids up from school.
“My kids, when they were in college—they’re out of college now—when I was driving back and forth to pick them up, they got me started [listening to podcasts],” Kuhn said. “[They’d say] ‘Oh, this is a podcast I listen to, let’s listen to it on the way home.’”
Kuhn starts the process for each episode similarly: First discussing with Riordan what’s going on with teachers and what the episode may be about.
“One of the recent episodes [“You Be You!”] was [about] teachers who are early in their career,” Kuhn said. “We talked about that, then we picked a few possible people and then we said let’s try this person.”
After contacting a selected teacher asking if they’re comfortable and available for the podcast, Kuhn sends them questions outlining what will be discussed.
The next step is setting a time and recording the podcast, which then gets posted. Each episode has a different title and reasoning behind it. Kuhn explains the choice behind episode four’s title- “You Be You!”
“If I had a message to students from teachers, it kind of comes to that,” Kuhn said. “You have to be you. As a teacher you have to do that, and as a student you have to do that.”
Similarly to each episode, the podcast’s title also is based around an idea, this being a specific phrase.
“It’s ‘Teacher Teach It,’ which is based on ‘preacher preach it,’” Kuhn said. “This is your chance to preach to the world about what we should be as teachers.”
The first episode came out Oct. 9, and it can be found on Amazon music or iHeart Media. The purpose is to share teaching strategies and stories, aiding teachers in becoming the best they can be and encouraging others to be themselves.
