“Sinners” is a movie that combines supernatural, horror and historical drama to create the scene of Jim Crow. The director of the film, Ryan Coogler, is an African American filmmaker known for his storytelling and dedication to representing black experiences through cinema such as “Black Panther” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”, “Fruitvale Station” and “Creed”.
The musical elements in “Sinners” bring in haunting melodies that enhance the movie scenes. “Sinners” is set in 1932 in Mississippi during the Jim Crow era, following a pair of twin brothers named Smoke and Stack Moore, both of which are portrayed by Michael B. Jordan. They return to their hometown Clarksdale after serving in World War I in hopes of starting a juke joint where the local black community can freely express themselves through music and dancing.
Using stolen money from gangsters to start the juke joint however, their plans are interrupted when a supernatural evil appears in their town threatening their lives and the communities. I personally wish they added more fighting scenes with the supernatural. Other than that they did great with the casting, except for the twins—I feel like they should not have had Michael B. Jordan playing both characters.
“Sinners” brings in many well-known songs like “This Little Light of Mine” which was created in Christian churches in the 1940s and “Flames of Fortune” by Don Toliver and Ludwig Göransson. The emotions in this movie were top tier-you could see the fear in their eyes, the hurt, and the grief you could also see it through their body language while acting. Throughout the movie the acting was just as it needed to be.
I would recommend this movie to individuals who like action packed films and or Michael B. Jordan as an actor. Overall, I’d give this movie a good four out of five stars!
