Two-time state champion Tigers were able to place first at sectionals and regionals after competing throughout the season. As the team prepares for the Final Four on Saturday, May 25 at the Hinkle Fieldhouse, their head coach, Carlos Capó, and the players put in efforts that pull them together and maintain consistency.

“We’ve had a pretty good formula in the last handful of years […],” Capó said. “I try to continue the same approach every year that has worked.”

Sophomore Cameron Benson, a Defensive Specialist for the junior varsity team, was drawn up to the varsity team for playoffs. Benson shares his thoughts on this decision made by the coaches.

“It feels really good to play for varsity because our varsity is one of the best in the state, so it just feels good to be on that team,” Benson said.

Benson has set goals and intentions for his performance on varsity. These ambitions were set to be accomplished by the end of the season.

“I would like to be a good source of energy and eventually play to become an important role for the team,” Benson said.

The varsity team has progressed every year for the past six years with ranking top three in Indiana persistently.

According to MaxPreps, the team has ranked first in the 2018-2019 and 2020-2021 seasons, second in 2023, and third in 2022. The season was cancelled during the 2019-2020 year due to COVID-19.

Although the team’s routines have stayed unchanged, there are endless ways for improvement. Capó spoke about an aspect he wishes to work on within the team.

“One of the things that we struggled with during the season was serving, it’s like a free throw in basketball,” Capó said. “If you try practicing too much, all of a sudden everyone gets frustrated and they’re too nervous, but we do have to continue to improve in serving because that’s the one area we struggle with during the season.”

The team continues their road to state and make the final push. While they work to make history for the school, their coach gives them the motivation to.

“I tell them I can give you energy, I can get you pumped up, I can set you up for success, but it is up to you how you execute,” Capó said.
