Mo Wood- The Fishers Mock Trial team’s season is nearing its end. Their last competition is Feb. 21 at the Noblesville Judicial center at 8 am. The team will be competing against teams like HSE, Carmel and Hamilton Heights. Results of their previous competitions will be released after the end of their season.
“‘I think we’ve done pretty well,” Mock Trial coach Liz Paternoster said.
The competition is conducted in a courtroom, like a real trial. The teams act as witnesses and attorneys without a script. Attorneys are judged on their questioning and arguments, witnesses on how well they give their testimonies and how well they get into character. Their goal is to get as far as they can in the competition and to learn about the judicial process and the art of argument.
Mock Trial competitions began in January; tryouts were in October. The 10 members meet on Mondays in Paternoster’s room where they set up the class like a courtroom. Acting attorneys practice opening and closing statements and witnesses practice their stories.
