Everybody welcome president Donald Trump. Since the election of the new president, there has been discord between not only Americans but also citizens from different countries. On Feb. 16, United States faced a national strike a day called “A Day Without Immigrants,” thousands of construction companies, restaurants, and other businesses are closing in response to the protest.
“This would affect in economy because besides putting a lot of work so that money flows, we [immigrants] also consume,” Navarro said. “This country is not just Americans, but many cultures, this country would stop working if we [immigrants] stop contributing.”
According to the National Radio News even high ranked business closed for support of this protest. Chef and entrepreneur José Andrés close his restaurants in Washington, D.C. Celebrity chef Rick Bayless closed four restaurants in Chicago as well many others. Few schools were closed for the lack of student body and faculty.
Not only business were closed, but people are abstaining from shopping to cause an effect in the economy. This strike was organized during staff meetings, constructions sites, mouth to mouth as well as social media, according to The New York Times.
“In part I think this [protest] is wrong, because the one they want to affect is Trump, but they can’t because these is not his business, jobs or restaurants,” Navarro said. “You don’t harm him but hurt yourself, your bosses or teachers. Obviously you are here to earn money, but when you stop going for work you are losing that payday. We are making a change, but not like this.”
Immigrants –mostly undocumented– produce an average of $11 billion in output for the United States according to CNN Money. Trump’s new policy can cause the economy to fall for an average of $1 trillion plus the lost of workers as well as money immigrants spend at shops and restaurants in America.
