Plastic bottles can now be discarded in yellow hexagonal bins around the school. Added by the environmental club, these recycle bins aim to bring recycling to life.
“I had the idea to recycle bottles at the school when I started the environmental club back when I was a sophomore,” junior Ashdan Trexler said. “I thought it was a good place to start because it’s usually the norm for schools to have recycling, but our school doesn’t.”
The recycling bins can be found around the school in locations such as the CCA and hallways. Their bright containers marked with black renewable symbols makes them stand out. Plastic can be thrown away here as long as it does not have food in it.
“The bins are mostly for bottles and cans but we recycle all plastic,” Trexler said. “They just need to be clean, which is why it is easier to say bottles because then there’s no food being in the bins.”
Plastic bottles that are thrown away in the regular trash cans arrive in landfills, which is harmful to the environment. These take up to 1,000 years to photodegrade, according to Live Life Healthy, a website about healthy living.
The yellow bins will remain up for students to throw away their bottles. Before, Fishers High School did not have a recycling program, however, Trexler hopes that this will add recycling to the school.
“I hope the bins will stay up forever,” Trexler said. “When I graduate, I will try to recruit someone who is really passionate to take it over.”
