This school year, Fishers High School has presented their first baking club. The club has met every other Thursday since Sept. 19.
A baking club has been attempted to be created before at FHS but since students are not allowed to use equipment after school hours, it hasn’t gone through. Junior Oryana Rahmeh, the creator of the club, has a passion for baking which lead to her wanting to start the club.
“Since sophomore year, I’ve wanted to start a club, and I came up with the idea of a baking club,” Rahmeh said. “This year, I decided to create the club and bake desserts that don’t require ovens.”
Due to the lack of equipment, the members find recipes that they can make in a microwave that still end up delicious. The club has about 20 members so far and have baked chocolate strawberry tarts, cinnamon rolls and cherry cheesecake.
To get a club approved at FHS, students must submit a form and find an adult sponsor for the club. Rahmeh picked Principles of Teaching/Child Development teacher, Katie Delucenay to sponsor the new baking club. Delucenay has helped the club come up with solutions to bake without using the school’s ovens.
“Mrs. D used to be my Child Development teacher and was always kind and loved working with students. I looked up to her and knew she’d be excited to help me,” Rahmeh said.
Delucenay said that Rahmeh hopes to go to a nursing home and bake for them and wants to get out into the community at some point and share the sweet treats the club has been making.
“Over the summer, I interned at a retirement home, organizing activities for the elderly,” Rahmeh said. “Everyone was so kind, and I hope to connect with the activity manager to bring the baking club there this winter.
Rahmah created this club so her and others can enjoy the sweetness of baking.
Rahmeh said, “I want the baking club to be a fun space where people can bring friends, experiment with new recipes, and enjoy what they make.”
Students are able to still join the club. To join, you can show up to their meetings in room C204. Students must contribute an $8 fee as well. If you wanted to join, you could reach out to Oryana Rahmeh through her email or through the clubs Instagram (@baking.fhs).
