Since 2016, one of the most watched shows of all-time is “Stranger Things” and every couple of years it would break its own record of high viewership. It has been a cultural phenomenon, but every show ends eventually. So, the Duffer brothers, the creators, chose season five as the ending point. Once this was announced, the question was: will the ending suck like “Game of Thrones” season eight, one of the lowest rated seasons on IMDB for a TV show, or will the series remain one of the best TV shows of the 2010s-2020s?
I believe that from the first four episodes of season five “Stranger Things” will continue to be talked about for a long time. There was a bit of doubt at first in episode one when the show kept trying to continue the weird high school plot that everyone forgets about, that never carries emotional weight, but when the show continued with its intriguing mystery of what’s going on in the Upside Down after the ending of season four, it reminded me immediately on why audiences loved the show.
Season five so far has been jam packed with nostalgia, action, and intrigue that will entertain almost anyone. It wonderfully intertwines a mystery while simultaneously answering questions that fans have had for a long time. So far, this season feels like it is made for fans. I am really intrigued by how the writers are going to wrap this mystery into a finale that is going to be satisfying, but I think the writers are strong enough to have it in them.
The most important part of this show to me this season is how they are showing off the scale of this final season, making sure it feels like an event worth watching with the family during the holiday season. Netflix is securing their spot in every television conversation for the next couple of months and will most likely be nominated for tons of Emmys.
I think most people will complain about the way this season is being released in multiple parts, but I argue that it is worth it because of how much anticipation it builds. The action in these first few episodes had me on the edge of my seat, especially certain reveals that surprised me because of how audacious they seemed.
Overall, I believe that these first four episodes make for a perfect part one. They build the right amount of intrigue to set up for what could be a fantastic finale. It is not without caution, but it seems that the writers have perfectly written their way to a finale that the fans will be proud of. I give “Stranger Things” season five part one overall 5/5 stars hoping that the next two parts that release with three episodes on Dec. 25 and the final episode on Dec. 31 are just as amazing as this first part.
