Every winter, one matchup stands out for Fishers High School basketball: the Mudsock. When Fishers High School and Hamilton Southeastern High School meet on the court, it is never just another game. It is a rivalry built on years of competition, pride, and familiarity. The gym is louder, the emotions are higher, and every chance with the ball feels like it could decide the outcome.
For junior point guard Cooper Zachary (#4), the intensity of Mudsock comes from how well the two teams know each other.
“Mudsock is tough because both teams know each other so well, and the intensity is always high,” Zachary said. “There’s a lot of pride involved, so every possession matters and mistakes get punished quickly.”
That familiarity leaves little room for error, turning even small mistakes into momentum-shifting moments.
To prepare for that pressure, Fishers has leaned heavily into physicality. Zachary explained that practices have focused on finishing through contact and staying strong defensively.
“Coach has really emphasized toughness and being the toughest team on the floor each night,” Zachary said.
In a rivalry where emotions can run high, that physical and mental edge could make a difference late in the game.
Another advantage for Fishers is the environment. With the game being played at the Fishers Event Center, Zachary believes the crowd can have a real impact.
“Home-court energy is huge in a rivalry game,” he said. “Our fans bring a lot of emotion and momentum, and that gives us an extra boost when things get tough.”
Confidence has also grown from experience.
“We trust each other and have been in those moments together before,” Zachary said. “We’ve worked on late-game situations all season and believe in making the right plays when it matters most.”
In a rivalry that often comes down to the final minutes, that trust could be the difference. For freshman guard Tristan Breland (#20), preparation begins mentally.
“I am preparing by getting my mind in the right space by listening to music and thinking positively,” Breland said.
While preparation looks different for every player, staying mentally locked in is essential for a game as intense as Mudsock.
Breland also acknowledged the challenges the Hamilton Southeastern basketball team presents.
“They are really fast in transition and run their sets well,” Breland said.
That speed means Fishers must stay disciplined on defense and sprint back to prevent easy scoring opportunities. According to Breland, the rivalry atmosphere only raises stakes.
One area where Breland has seen improvement is team chemistry. “I feel like our chemistry has gotten a lot better, and we are getting better at running our sets,” he said. Improved chemistry often leads to better communication, smarter decisions, and stronger execution, which are all key factors in a close rivalry game. For Breland, success will come down to effort and energy.

While the boys varsity team prepares for the spotlight, the girls varsity matchup brings its own pressure and intensity. Sophomore guard and forward Reagan Reiff (#10) emphasized the importance of staying composed in such a high-stakes environment.
“I’m just going to treat it as if it were another game,” Reiff said. “I’ll do the same routine as I always do. Obviously, since it’s such a competitive game and environment, emotions will be running high, but I’ll just try to stay focused on the scout and controlling what I can control.”
Reiff noted that Hamilton Southeastern presents challenge on both ends of the floor.
“HSE is very aggressive on offense and defense,” she said. “They have a couple key players that we’ll focus on the most, but they also have a lot of good role players that can contribute.”
Because of that depth, Fishers will rely on discipline, communication, and defensive focus to limit easy scoring opportunities.
The atmosphere at the Fishers Event Center will also be a new experience for some players.
“I’ve never played in that big of a gym and with that many people,” Reiff said. “This game will be very intense, loud, and high stress, so our team needs to ignore distractions and stay focused.”
Most importantly, Reiff sees Mudsock as an opportunity.
“I’m excited to prove that we can compete,” she said. “A lot of people think that we can’t win or hang with them. We are a good team, and we are excited to go and play.”
As the rivalry approaches, one thing is clear: Mudsock is about more than records or rankings. It is about pride, preparation, and performing under pressure. Based on the confidence, chemistry, and home-court energy expressed by Fishers players, the Tigers appear poised to have the edge heading into the matchup. If Fishers can control the pace, stay disciplined defensively, and feed off the crowd’s energy, they put themselves in a strong position to come out on top.
The Mudsock rivalry will take place this Friday, Dec. 19, at the Fishers Event Center. Girls varsity basketball tips off at 6:00 p.m., followed by boys varsity at 8 p.m.
