After more than four decades in education, Fishers High School Athletic director, James “Jim” Brown is preparing to retire at the end of the school year. His time at Fishers has left a lasting impact on the school’s athletic programs, coaches, and student athletes, as he steps away, Brown reflects on his journey, accomplishments, and what the future holds.
Brown’s path to becoming an athletic director started with a love for sports and coaching. He was inspired by the way sports and coaching made him feel and wanted to continue this specific path.
“I have always had a passion for sports and originally went into education to coach. After years of teaching and coaching, I realized I wanted to have a broader impact, which led me to pursue athletic administration,” Brown said, “I was fortunate early in my career to be offered the opportunity at Triton Central High School during my fifth year. That opportunity set me on this oath, and 41 years later, I am grateful that path brought me to Fishers High School.”
Throughout his career, Brown has focused on supporting both coaches and athletes. His leadership has helped create a strong and successful athletic program at Fishers. Reflecting on his contributions, he had hoped that his efforts made everyone, specifically coaches, feel important.
“I hope that our coaches feel supported and valued, and that I have helped them grow both professionally and within their programs,” Brown said, “Providing resources, guidance, and encouragement has always been a priority, and I take pride in helping create an environment where coaches and student athletes can succeed.”
Looking back on his 20 years at Fishers, Brown says the experience has been incredibly meaningful. From opening a new high school to building programs from the ground up, his last year has been filled with memorable moments.
“Looking back, Fishers has been a wonderful place to finish my career in education,” Brown said, “The opportunity to help open a new high school is something very few people experience, and I am grateful I had that chance. It was exciting, challenging, and incredibly rewarding. From hiring an entire coaching staff to purchasing equipment, building schedules, and starting with only freshman through juniors—it was a unique experience. Not having a senior class that first year made it even more memorable. Most importantly, I have met a lot of great people and built lasting friendships. I truly feel fortunate to have spent the last 20 years at Fishers.”
Brown’s dedication has not gone unnoticed as he was recently honored with a major award. Brown said he felt truly special and honored to be chosen to receive the 2026 Administrator of the Year award.
“It was a true honor to receive the 2026 Administrator of the Year award from the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association,” Brown said, “To be recognized by coaches means a great deal, because it reflects that they feel supported in their work and vision. That recognition is very meaningful and serves as validation that I’ve done my job in a way that positively impacted others.”
As his career comes to a close, Brown has decided to end his legacy of being athletic director at Fishers. His decision was influenced by his emotions and what felt right to him.
“After 46 years in education and 41 years as an athletic director, the decision ultimately came down to a feeling,” Brown said, “You often hear people say, ‘you will know when it’s time’, and for me, that moment came at the start of this school year. It just felt right. While I am confident in the decision, I know I will miss the people the most. The relationships built over the years will be the hardest part to leave behind.”
Even as he leaves, Brown aims to leave a lasting impact on FHS athletics. He hopes when he leaves, that the culture and school spirit will remain.
“I hope to leave behind a culture that puts students first and takes pride in doing things the right way,” Brown said, “Fishers should continue to be a place where student-athletes are supported, challenged, and given every opportunity to succeed both on and off the field. “Most importantly, I hope the strong foundation we’ve built continues to grow and improve in the years ahead.”
Although retirement marks the end of his career, Brown is looking forward to a new chapter in his life.
“I plan to stay in Fishers and spend more time with my grandchildren,” Brown said, “I also look forward to attending Fishers athletic events in a new way—this time from the stands, enjoying the full experience of the game without the behind-the-scenes responsibilities that often kept me busy during contests.”
As Jim Brown steps away from his role, his influence on Fishers High School will not go unrecognized. His commitment to students, coaches, and the community has helped build a strong athletic tradition that will continue for years to come.
